Preliminary Task

In Today's lesson we were set of to shoot our short practise music video.  I worked alongside my partner Abigail.  We filmed in three locations; on the field in front of a brick wall , in front of of a black gate and on the stairwell.

Upon editing we realise that the exposure of the video was too high which hindered the video quality. We didn't have a tripod which meant the video was filmed via hands, this made the video very shaky.

Class Case Studies - Music Videos

In Today's lesson we discussed the following;

What are the conventions of Music Video?
  • Typically 3-4 mins long
  • Visuals reflect lyrics-usually
  • Some music videos are abstract/ others are conceptual
  • Music Videos typically focus on the "star","authorage (distinctive visual style e.g Lady Gaga and her wacky outfits), "artist"
  • Music Videos tend to have a lot of angles with different representation e.g. low angle = High status
  • Mise-en-scene varies depending on the music video genre; Sometimes they can be aspirational to the audience e.g. Chris Brown wearing the latest Jordans trainers and young youths wanting to be like him.
  • Music video tend to have a lot of fast cutting which is sync to  the beat of the song.
  • Lip Sync- Performance- Dancing

 Examples;

Beyonce - Single Ladies
  • Camera pan through the video
  • Beyonce is framed center - She had all the screen time
  • Fades & Transitions - The lighting was used to portray the fades and transition.
  • Mainly made up of wide shots
  • Mise-en-scene -Themed Costume-  all three women are dressed in black however the artist's (Beyonce) clothing is slightly different making her stand out more. Also she is wearing a gold glove which connotes the lyrics of the song as she repeatedly refers back to it by pointing at it.
  • Lip Sync & Dancing

Ariana Grande ft Iggy Azeala - Problem
  • Various of shot angle and camera movements; a lot of close ups, bird's eye view
  • Mise-en-scene- Themed 60's costumes i.e. classic white gloss knee high boots, big pony tail hair, Bikes etc. Two different persona's illustrated in the music video; Ariana- cute/ sexy & Iggy - fierce & sexy
  • Based in a studio
  • Male gazed-  Both artist featuring in the music video are dressed provocatively/ subtly sexualised.
  • Target Audience- Young Females
